Session 1: Workshop Goals and Expectations

Before we get started, we’d like to you take a moment to familiarize yourself with our goals and expectations for this online workshop:

Workshop Goals:

  • From a practical sense, we want you to leave this workshop with a strong sense of Facing History's interactive website, Choosing to Participate, including its content, themes and potential for use in the classroom.

  • For those of you who are new to Facing History, we hope this workshop will mark the beginning of a longer relationship, encouraging you to find out more about our content and methods. For those of you already in our Educator Network, we hope this workshop offers you a new resource and ideas for you to include as you teach Facing History.

  • Ultimately, our most important goal and hope is that Choosing to Participate serves as a catalyst for conversation about the importance of participation in our community, nation, and world. We hope that the workshop encourages participants to come together in conversation around complicated questions of prejudice and injustice and to identify ways to transform their communities.

Workshop Expectations:

  • Work at your own pace. Although we recommend that you commit to completing the workshop within a time period of no more than two weeks, it is entirely up to you the speed and pace with which you move through the workshop.

  • Approximately eight hours of participation is expected to successfully complete the course. The more thoughtful time you put into the workshop assignments and activities, and the more time you spend on Choosing to Participate, the more you will get out of the experience.

  • Follow the sequence of activities, from this Session 1: How to Participate in this Self-Paced Workshop through Session 5: Connections, Feedback and Next Steps. This sequence will help you deepen your own understanding of the site and how it can best work for you and your students.

Of course, it's fine if you want to return to re-examine any section or discussions which you've already visited. The site will always be here as a resource for you to return to. And please, don't hesitate to contact us with any question or concern at: ctpworkshop@facing.org.
